What is the purpose of concept art for games?
Concept art is an important thing in many businesses, not just the gaming industry and is a great way to visualise ideas and to realise the potential in them to make the greater.
Yes, its great to say this is the type of product we want and and this is what it will do, This is the story in this type of world and all that but when it comes to making the product itself how will you understand how it will work and look.
So companies like Ferrari, Apple and Ubisoft all use concept art to understand there ideas and how they would work and to improve on them.
For example ferrari is making a car and they have some ideas in there brain but they dont visualise it before making the product. They go straight to building it and because they didn't do any concept work on paper and with models they didn't notice the problems in measurements.
The dashboard they made wouldn't around the windshield properly, Because of this they go make another and spend a lot more money to perfect it.
but another team saves money and makes this concept art and because they visualised it and understand the measurements and changed it to make it better before making the product. they saved money, time and came out with a better ending product.

This is the same for games they have to visualize allot more than the making of a cars as they have to create whole immersive worlds for the player to interact and move around in.
And with some games it will need more, especially if its from a world what does not exist like halo.
Like this piece of concept art made by John Wallin Liberto at bungie for Halo. It shows a ship with technology not designed yet as well as the futuristic armor on the character. So all this has to be made up and probably went through multiple variation before he stumbled on one which he liked.
Another thing that concept art is very good for is not just worlds that do not exist but time periods , this is where researching into the past and using concept art to vitalize and understand how it was like back then atmospherically and visually.
Like this image underneath made by Donglu Yu for assassins creed black flag. its a great image that shows of the caribean in this pirate world, it show of the viabrance and colours of a bright and sunny carrabian with waterfront ahead between the mountins of jungles.
Another way that concept art is helpful is when creating the characters of people who don't exist and it helps understand the character more not just by how they look but how they are as a character and how they react around things and even clothing can tell allot of what kind of person they are.
This drawing below is Ellie from The Last Of Us made by Hyoung Nam.
This shows allot, her clothes are worn out and ripped and dirty shes also wearing a back back as if traveling. shes also got a bruise on her cheek showing shes in a dangerous place.
New inventions have been made in the past which the creators used concept art to help understand how it works like Leanardo Da Vinci when making his 20ft flying machine as shown below.
It shows the shape it was going to take and how everything is linked to be able to work.
Lucas Cambaisios drawing have allot of kinda blocky shapes shown as concept lines and proportions towards characters in his drawings and wasn't hid away much in most of them.
Even Alexander Bell the inventor of the phone had concept sketches of the phone and he wasnt an artist but he still had them to better understand what he was inventing. I think hes a great example to show you dont need to be a great artist to draw ideas as long as they can be understood.

EVALUATION
I am pretty happy with what I got from the outcome of my
concept design especially with the amount of time I had and after the amount of
Mondays we missed as well as the date being brought forward.
There is allot what I would like to change though or do
better like completely finish the Cliffside buildings and the bridge, I also
want to work more with the colors mixing them together to make better textures especially clifface and with the the water to help show waves more.
i would want to redraw bits.
